Dear Secretary General,
I am writing to express my deepest concern over the recent protest and demonstration in Myanmar which lead by monks due to arrests, physical assaults, harsh treatment and unfair sentences by Junta towards the so-called peace-walkers who took on the streets to express their concern peacefully over the socio-economic situation in the country. As of date, more than 200 people are arrested and no one knows whereabouts of them despite affords made by the International Community.
Government-organised gangs, referred to as Swan-arshin, and members of the quasi-official Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA) have broken up most of the protests and detained participants during the course of August 2007, under the guidance of local council officials, special branch police and army officials who are wearing plain clothes. They are not simply "pro-government" gangs as widely reported.
According to one news report, these para-militia are being coordinated by a Myanmar Armed Forces officer, Colonel Than Han, together with USDA secretary, U Aung Thaung. Col. Than Han is also said to have been involved in the lethal May 2003 attack on a convoy carrying democracy leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her supporters at Depayin in upper Myanmar.
Protests are now continued and spread across the country since 18 September 2007. As the protests and unrest accelerates, according to the sources inside, Junta is planning to use the Arm forces in near future to crackdown Monks and peaceful walkers.
At this critical time the active involvement of the international community is absolutely vital. We, People of Myanmar, are looking for and depending upon support from United Nations in order to prevent the bloodshed and slaughter of innocence by Junta in the Golden Land, Myanmar (Burma).
I therefore call upon you and all concerned agencies and mandates within the United Nations system to take special responsibility to oversee that Myanmar issue obtain the highest attention and priority in the days and weeks ahead.
Your swift intervention is crucial. I await it with the highest expectations.
